What is RSS? How can I use RSS? How do I get a News Reader? Can I use these feeds on my site?

All RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds from OPI are based on the RSS 2.0 specification. RSS is a standard for syndicating frequently updated content from a site via a newsreader. Below are several readers that work well. To use the feeds listed on this page, drag the “RSS” image for each subscription you want into the Subscriptions pane of the newsreader application window.

Using RSS

Modern browsers such as Firefox 1.5.x, Opera 9.x, IE7 and Safari 3.x have built-in RSS capabilities. If your browsers are older, you can also access the feed using an RSS-aware application or dedicated reader, such as:

What is RSS?
A feed is simply a file containing summaries of stories and news. Using a news reader you can get a quick glimpse of stories published by OPI. Stories are often updated throughout the day. The news reader can notify you when a new story appears on the Web site, so you don't have to keep checking the site for new information. Not all websites currently provide RSS, but it is growing rapidly in popularity and many others, including the Guardian, New York Times, CNN and OPI provide RSS feeds.

How do I start using RSS feeds?
In general, the first thing you need is something called a News Reader. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. All allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds you want. Once you have chosen a News Reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want. For example, if you would like the latest Assessment calendar events, click on the blue RSS button next to the Assessement link aboveIf you click on the button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your News Reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your News Reader. Some browsers, including Firefox, Safari, OmniWeb and Opera, have functionality which automatically picks up RSS feeds for you. For more details on these, please check their websites.
