Montana Office of Public Instruction
New Teacher Assessment Survey

Dear Educator:

The Montana Office of Public Instruction was the recipient of one of the five McAuliffe Educator Explorer grants awarded by the Council for Chief State School Officers.  This award allows Montana to develop a statewide plan that identifies and supports the professional development needs of Montana-prepared beginning teachers. The data gathering process is the first step in identifying and supporting early teachers professional development needs.

The Office of Public Instruction requests that you respond to a Web based survey to assess the professional preparation, readiness, and future professional development needs.

The information from this survey will be used in two ways: to determine the professional development needs of new teachers, and to provide feedback to the colleges and universities that prepared these individuals for the profession.  The information will not be used in any way to affect your career or license.

This survey and data analysis process was developed in cooperation with the Montana education stakeholders in the interest of improving the preparation, mentoring, and professional development support of new teachers. All the information provided by you in this survey will be kept confidential, and any information shared by OPI with institutions of higher education will not include any information identifying you or your school. Complete and accurate data on all new teachers entering the profession in Montana is essential to the success of this project.

Thank you for your willingness to promote high quality professional development and your commitment to Montana education.  If you have questions or issues contact Margaret Bowles or Linda Peterson at the Office of Public Instruction.

Sincerely,

Montana McAuliffe Planning Team

DIRECTIONS
: The following survey items are derived in part from the “Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium” (INTASC) Standards.  For each item, please click the number from 1 to 5 (lowest to highest) that best describes the level of proficiency you believe you currently display.  The scale has been established so that the average, well- qualified beginning teacher should score most items in the middle of the range (3).  Consider the following criteria as you answer each item:

            1 = Not at all
            2 = Little bit
            3 = Getting there
            4 = Well
            5 = Extremely well
            6 = Don't know
