Governor and First Lady Brining Nancy's Garden to ClassroomsTuesday, March 1, 2011, 8:46 am
The Governor and First Lady’s Math & Science Initiative brings to classrooms a new opportunity that can help create the next generation of gardeners in Montana. Nancy’s Garden is the newest feature of the Governor and First Lady’s Math & Science Initiative (http://mathscience.mt.gov/). Nancy’s Garden will provide a gardening experience for every 4th-grade student across the state by supplying grow boxes, seeds, and teacher’s guide for each classroom. The grow boxes were made by the Montana Correctional Enterprises and Eleanor’s Garden, a new business in Montana. With the help of experts, a teacher’s guide will include: 1) detailed growing instructions, tips and soil procurement guidelines, 2) a series of lesson plans for learning activities that will take students through planting, growing, and finally eating produce from their Nancy’s Garden, and 3) resources and ideas for how to find volunteers to connect the classroom garden to the community. The Governor’s staff will be in touch with schools in the coming weeks to coordinate getting Nancy’s Garden to classrooms in March.
