Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 9:09 am

The White House launched a major new initiative to place 5,000 salad bars in schools across the country.  First Lady Michelle Obama announced that the new Salad Bars to Schools initiative will help bring salad bars into schools that are interested in using alternative ways to encourage students to choose healthy food options.

Schools/districts with Bronze status or above in the Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) will have priority in receiving a fully funded salad bar as money is raised; with the stipulation that the school desires and can support a salad bar every day in school lunch.

Schools interested in salad bars can complete an online application at . Grant eligibility applications will be accepted beginning January 1, 2011.

Schools are then able to complete an individual web page to gather donations from the community.  Once enough money has been raised, a salad bar will be shipped to the school.
