Juneau Convenes Spring Meeting of Student Advisory Board
Students to Focus on Safe and Respectful Schools

Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau will convene the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board (SAB) in Helena on Monday and Tuesday, April 29 and 30. Students will gather Monday evening at the Holter Museum of Art and at the Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP Wild Classroom at Spring Meadow Lake on Tuesday. The focus of the Spring meeting of the Student Advisory Board is how to create safe and respectful schools.

Said Superintendent Juneau, “Hearing from students about what is going on in their schools and getting their ideas about what we can do to help improve the education system has proven vital to my work. I’m interested in hearing more from students not only about how adults can help create positive learning environments but also about what they can do as students to make each other feel safe and respected.”

The Student Advisory Board consists of 32 high school students from 28 Montana schools. It was created as part of Superintendent Juneau's statewide initiative, Graduation Matters Montana. Graduation Matters Montana aims to increase the number of Montana students who graduate from high school prepared for college and careers.

Student Advisory Board members were first nominated by local school and community members and also had to apply for selection to the board.  The board members, in grades 10–12, are traveling from rural communities such as Froid and Valier and from large communities such as Bozeman and Great Falls. Superintendent Juneau is currently seeking nominations for the 2013-2014 Student Advisory Board.
