Greg Mortenson Donates 1,000 books to Montana Schools of Promise

Greg Mortenson, co-founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute, founder of Pennies for Peace and co-author of the number one New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea, has donated 1,000 books to four Montana schools.

Through the Pearson Foundation's We Give Books program, schools in Lodge Grass, Lame Deer, Pryor and Frazer will receive copies of the best-selling book, Three Cups of Tea, as well as the young reader version and the picture book version.

"The Central Asia Institute and I are honored to help with a donation of books and hope that they will help empower our special friends and the dear children in the Montana Schools of Promise," said Mortenson. "The students are a kindred spirit to the tribal children we help empower through education and literacy in rural Afghanistan and Pakistan, so this is a great honor for us."

"The greatest gift we can give our young people is a love of reading," stated Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau. "I want to thank Greg Mortenson for his generous gift to Montana students and his dedication to education and literacy."

Montana Schools of Promise is an Office of Public Instruction initiative that seeks to dramatically improve the quality of education in our state’s most struggling schools. In January, 2010, Schools of Promise received a substantial boost through a three-year U.S. Department of Education grant that allows the OPI to work intensively with four school systems located on the Fort Peck Reservation, the Crow Reservation, and the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.

Added Mortenson, "The Montana Schools of Promise remind me of an ancient Persian proverb that says, 'When it is dark, you can see the stars.' Through reading, literacy and education, a great light shines across the majestic mountains and golden prairies of our Montana home."
