MATELA provides Montana teachers the following services:
- improving the quality of English language arts instruction
- providing opportunity for study and discussion of problems confronting English language arts teachers
- circulating information and resource materials regarding English language arts to teachers, librarians, administrators, and the general public
- sponsoring conferences and meetings to improve instruction and share expertise
- publishing articles, reports, and research relevant to Montana English language arts teachers
- securing cooperation to render more effective the efforts of English language arts teachers
- integrating forensic, dramatic, journalistic, library-media, and reading organizations
- facilitating communication among college English programs, teacher preparation programs, and the state Office of Public Instruction with the needs of elementary and secondary school English language arts teachers
MATELA is an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers in English. Since 1911, NCTE has worked to advance teaching, research, and student achievement in English language arts at all scholastic levels.
