The E-Rate program, established
by the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and funded at
up to $2.25 billion per year with contributions from
telecommunications companies, provides discounts from
20% to 90% on the cost of telecommunications, Internet
access, and network wiring within library and school
buildings. The discounts are paid directly to the companies
that provide libraries and schools with these technology
services.
The E-Rate program is
administered by the Schools
and Libraries Division of
the Universal
Service Administrative Company ,
a not-for-profit corporation overseen by the Federal
Communications Commission to ensure that the benefits
of Universal Service reach communities across the country. |
